WICC
TRANSMITTER AT PLEASURE BEACH
cont.
Photos
used in a 1967 Property Appraisal Report. The photographer is unknown.
 |
The approach to
the Pleasure Beach bridge, from the corner of Seaview and
Central Avenues. The bridge now stands with over 100 feet
of fire damaged structure on the island side, the span is
swung in the open position, and the remains are decaying.
"Jersey Barriers" block vehicular access at the
foreground of this picture. This situation makes the job
of the engineers extremely difficult, since they can no
longer drive to the site. The City of Bridgeport has absolutely
no plans to rebuild the bridge. |
 |
After a short drive
through the park you arrive at the site. WICC has occupied
this house since 1936 as the location for it's transmitting
facilities. Apparently, back in 1967, a single chain strung
through concrete pillars was deemed adequate security. Today,
a tall, barbed wire fence protects not only the building,
but each transmitting tower from unauthorized access. Today,
the tree in the right of this photo has been felled, and
there are bushes in front on each side of the door on the
left. |
  |
A view of the South
Tower. Each of the two self supporting tapered towers is
300 feet tall and about 670 feet apart. What first looks
like a speck or smudge on the right edge of the photo is
actually a Sikorsky Sky Crane flying past. Sikorsky Aircraft
operated a factory and landing field nearby in Bridgeport
on South Avenue, and take-offs and landings of helicopters
were very common. S55's, S56's, Sky Cranes and even one
of the Presidential Helicopters, Marine 1, could be seen
flying in and out of the heliport. It was a popular sight
during the 50's and 60's when Seaside Park was packed with
bathers and visitors. The plant has since closed down. |
 |
Located just south
the transmitter building were these cottages that date back
to World War II. They were unoccupied at the time these
pictures were taken, evidenced by the boards across the
windows. Shortly afterwards, they were demolished. Like
most of the nicer things on Pleasure Beach, such as the
amusement park, they are now just a memory. Only depressions
in the sand remain to indicate their former location. |
 |
An overview of
the transmitting area and other properties on pleasure Beach
as they stood when the photos were taken. On the left, the
Polka Dot Theatre and the Pleasure Beach Ballroom are no
longer located on the island. The Theatre has moved several
times and is now in a new facility in Downtown Bridgeport.
The Ballroom was destroyed in a huge arson fire, and the
perpetrators were never apprehended.
On the right are three circles connected by a thin
line through the centers. The upper most circle is the location
of the North Tower. The center circle shows the location
of the third (wire) element, which was abandoned in the
70's. The rectangle inside the circle shows the location
of the transmitter building property. The lower circle
is the South Tower. The line shown bisecting the circle
is the Bridgeport/Stratford town line. Although in this
drawing the circle, an 80' radius from the tower center,
is what is shown as being cut, in reality the tower leg
closest to that line is actually located in the Town of
Stratford.
The cottages shown in the photo above are those indicated
to the direct left of the South Tower. |
