First public mention of WICC dates back to 1926

The very first public mention of radio station WICC appeared in a story in the November 16, 1926 edition of the Bridgeport Telegram. It told how Bridgeport's radio broadcasting station would have a new label beginning on November 21. WCWS would become WICC, with the last three letters standing for Industrial Capitol of Connecticut. The station would occupy the same frequency (285 meters, at the time) and the same power, 500 watts. The holder of the WCWS license was The Bridgeport Broadcasting Company, Inc.

Just to keep things in perspective, another story that appeared on that same page told of how Congressman John Q. Tilson had spent a total of $2,266.93 in his campaign to secure re-election.

In a strange twist of fate, just before WICC began it's life, WCWS was mentioned in the Bridgeport Telegram, concerning a rather unusual situation:

Ventilating Fan Shuts Off Radio. A ventilating fan in radio station WCWS was the indirect means of shutting off the program which is usually given from that studio on Sunday afternoon.

The Chopin Ensemble program which was scheduled for 2 o'clock Sunday had to be cancelled as two members of the emsemble were engaged to play with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra yesterday. The California Nightingales, an organization led by Reginald Gallipeau, studio announcer and violinist was scheduled to play in place of the ensemble.

But. Mr. Gallipeau tripped on a rug on the studio floor and in thrusting out his arm to save himself from falling, jabbed a finger into the ventilating fan. Fortunately, Mr. Gallipeau did not lose the finger, but it took four stitches to repair it, and all violin playing was out of the question for the time being. So the program was called off.

WICC began it's first broadcast day on Sunday, November 21, 1926. The programming for the day consisted of:
10:30AM - Park Street Congregational Services
2:00PM - The California Nightingales
3:30PM - Ruge's Reveliers
5:00PM - The Dixie Boys and Ray
7:00PM - United Congregational Church Services

Some of the other stations on the air competing for listeners were WJZ, New York; WEAF, New York; WMCA, New York; WGBS, New York; WRNY, New York; WFCH, New York; WLWL, New York, WAHG, Richmond Hill; WBBB, Staten Island; WTIC, Hartford and WGY, Schenectady.
