Jim Buchanan

WICC's Jim Buchanan hosts the Talk of the Town, Monday-Friday 4pm-7pm.  Jimmy B. covers local topics, including politics, entertainment, and lifestyle issues.  You can also hear Jim Buchanan covering WICC afternoon news.

Jim Buchanan has been a fixture in the broadcast industry for more than 40 years – most of that time in Connecticut. Born at a remarkably young age in Brooklyn, NY, Jim worked at various radio stations throughout his home state and Vermont before finally leaving Albany in 1972 to settle in Connecticut. In his first stint in the Nutmeg State, he hosted the morning show on WCCC in Hartford. From there, Jim headed southeast to become afternoon-drive announcer and assistant program director at WNLC-WTYD in New London. In 1977, Jim returned to the capital city, this time as afternoon-drive talent on WRCH-WRCQ. Then, in 1979, he first popped up in Bridgeport, as a part-time DJ at WICC. In 1982, Jim assumed the afternoon-drive slot full time… and the rest – as they say – is history. Throughout his career, Jim has served as teacher and mentor to aspiring broadcasters – both in his guidance and encouragement of radio-station interns and other young people who have sought his advice and counsel, and as an instructor at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting in Hartford and Stratford.

Jim’s commitment to community is legendary; he regularly participates in community events throughout Southern Connecticut; and he spearheaded WICC’s fund-raising effort to defray the veterinary bills for a trio of young alligators found in a trash bin several days after being kidnapped from The Beardsley Zoo in the summer of 1989. The fundraiser, which Jim aptly dubbed “Gator Aid,” raised thousands of dollars for the reptiles’ care and culminated with a live broadcast from the zoo.

During his long and distinguished career, Jim has interviewed everyone from President Richard M. Nixon to the president of the local Girl Scout Council. As host of “Talk of the Town,” he continues his longstanding tradition of giving voice to each side of an issue – with the understanding that the issues and facts are the real stars of his popular, long-running talk show.
